What is Gingival Inflammation?

Gingivitis, known as gingivitis, is a gum problem caused by dental plaque accumulated in the teeth irritating the gums. Since it constitutes the initial stage of gum diseases, early diagnosis and treatment is very important. Gingivitis that is not treated at this stage can progress and lead to serious periodontal problems. Regular and effective tooth brushing and oral care are essential to prevent gingivitis. In case of adverse conditions such as swollen gums, bleeding gums during tooth brushing or bad odor in the mouth, a dentist should be consulted as soon as possible. Gingivitis occurs when adequate attention is not paid to oral and dental care. Infections in the gums due to some systemic diseases or malnutrition are also among the factors that cause gingivitis. Gingivitis is a bacterial infection. It can cause pain depending on the severity of the inflammation. When gingivitis is recognized at the initial stage, it heals with adequate oral hygiene. However, if care is not taken, it can cause serious problems.

What are the symptoms of gingivitis?

Gum recession,
Bleeding gums during brushing,
Swelling, redness, tenderness of the gums,
Pain when chewing or speaking,
Sensitivity to hot or cold,
Bad odor in the mouth.

What are the causes of gingivitis?

When food residues are not cleaned well, they accumulate in the pocket between the tooth and gum and form a layer of bacterial plaque called dental plaque. This plaque layer presses on the gums and causes gingivitis. Although the biggest cause of gingivitis is bacterial plaque, other causes can be listed as follows:
Smoking,
Pregnancy,
Some systemic diseases,
Sugar disease,
Genetic factors,
The use of systemic drugs that affect the gums,
Structural disorders in the teeth,
Old fillings that are broken or need to be replaced.
