Fluoride is an element that strengthens tooth structure and helps prevent tooth decay. When teeth first erupt, the enamel is not fully matured and is therefore more susceptible to cavities.
Fluoride protects tooth enamel against acid attacks and increases resistance to decay. Systemically ingested fluoride also contributes to the strengthening of bone structure.
Direct application of fluoride to the teeth is an effective method for cavity prevention. In children, fluoride should be applied regularly every six months.
