How Does the Implant Treatment Process Work?
Dental implants are titanium artificial tooth roots placed in the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Teeth are placed on these artificial roots to provide the patient with a functional and aesthetic appearance. When implant treatment is performed by a specialist physician, successful results are obtained and the patient can use their implants for many years without any problems.
What should be done before implantation?
Before starting implant treatment, the necessary checks are performed to determine whether the patient is suitable for implant treatment and what kind of treatment plan will be followed. After questioning the general health status of the patient, the necessary x-rays and tomography are taken, and the teeth and jaws are measured in order to determine the location of the implants and the treatment plan. After all measurements, it is determined where and how the implants will be placed and which implants will be used. The patient is informed at every stage of all these procedures and the implants to be preferred and the prostheses to be made on them are specified.
How is implant surgery performed?
Before starting the implant surgery, local anesthesia is applied to the implant area and it is expected to become numb. After numbness is achieved, the gum is removed by making an incision in the implant area and the bone is exposed. The implant is screwed into the bone by drilling a hole in the thickness and length of the implant to be used. The gum is closed again and sutured. After the implant is placed in the jawbone, the implant is expected to fuse with the jawbone for about 3-6 months. After the bone fusion is completed, the implant area is reopened and the upper cover called the healing cap is placed on the implant. After 2 weeks of waiting for healing, the construction of the prostheses to be applied on the implant can begin.
How long does implant treatment last?
The duration of implant treatment varies depending on the oral and dental health of the patient, the number of implants, additional treatments, but it takes approximately 6-9 months. This period may be longer or shorter. The method with the shortest duration of implant treatment is to place the implant immediately into the cavity formed when the tooth is extracted.
How is a prosthesis applied over the implant?
After the implant is placed in the jawbone and fusion with the bone is completed, prostheses can be applied when the gums are ready. After the fixed or removable prostheses are prepared in the laboratory environment and the fit is checked, patients can start using their prostheses immediately.
In which cases is implant treatment not applicable?
Implants should not be implanted in individuals who are receiving radiotherapy or chemotherapy, or who have a significant uncontrolled systemic disease.
