Smile design is the process of making the teeth and gums, which do not look aesthetically good, look as natural and beautiful as possible according to the patient’s face shape and needs. It is performed by applying many procedures together. The aim of smile design is to provide aesthetics and the most natural appearance with minimal preparation to the dental structures as conservatively as possible.

The applications in smile design differ according to the patient's expectations and needs. During treatment planning, the patient's facial features, age, gender and wishes are taken into consideration. Scaling and treatment of decayed teeth are generally applied to all patients. Then, planning is made according to the patient's wishes and needs. The procedures determined generally consist of teeth whitening, gingivectomy (gingivectomy), implants and prosthesis if there is tooth loss, porcelain laminates and orthodontic treatments.

In smile design, the patient's mouth is first measured and modeled. Problems are identified through the model made. Intraoral and facial photographs of the patient are taken and digitized in computer environment and made compatible with the face shape. It is determined how the patient will look after the treatment. After the planning is completed, if there is no crowding that requires orthodontic treatment, gum treatment is started.
