What Is a Dental Bridge? What Is the Treatment Process?
Spec. Dr. Erdi İçen2 min read

A dental bridge is a treatment used to replace missing teeth. It fills the gap left by teeth lost for any reason so that function can continue. It is called a bridge because it is supported by the teeth on both sides of the gap. These teeth are reduced and, with the crowns placed on them, act as the supports of the bridge. Dental bridges, a commonly used treatment, can be made from different materials; the material best suited to the patient's problem and preference is chosen. The aim of a dental bridge is to restore the missing function in the patient's mouth and to provide better aesthetics. By removing the unattractive appearance caused by missing teeth, the patient regains self-confidence.
What is the process for a dental bridge?
Before dental bridge treatment begins, the patient's mouth is examined clinically and with X-rays. The patient's expectations are discussed and the dentist decides on the most suitable treatment. Treatment begins once the patient has given consent. In the first session, the teeth in the area where the bridge will be placed are prepared. The teeth that will act as supports for the bridge are reduced to a suitable thickness. The amount of reduction depends on the material of the prosthesis. Local anaesthesia is applied to reduce sensitivity while the teeth are prepared. After preparation, temporary prostheses are fitted on the teeth and the session ends. At this stage, there is a waiting period for the gum to heal. About a week later, the temporary prostheses are removed, impressions of the mouth are taken and the tooth colour is chosen. The impressions are then sent to the laboratory. When the bridge has been made in the laboratory, it is tried in the mouth. Any necessary adjustments are made; if none are needed, the bridge is polished with the patient's approval and fixed with special adhesives. Most patients get used to their bridge after an adjustment period of about a week.
What are the advantages of a dental bridge?
A dental bridge restores the missing function in the mouth so that patients can eat comfortably. It also corrects the appearance problem caused by the missing tooth.
